Flying Reindeer

Nick already had the flying horse or boat idea from the Norse, but when the church added in the Old Nick myths suddenly Nick’s transport was downgraded from horse to reindeer. (This was definitely an exercise in downsizing.) You see, Old Nick flew as well, but did so by attacking some poor innocent animal and putting him under his spell.

The animal was then his beast of burden until it died of exhaustion from flying at top speeds around the world. In the Old Nick myth it could have been any animal, but the myths stuck with the idea of reindeer because they were plentiful up north where Old Nick, aka St. Nick, came from.
